Computers may have issues in the rainy season. Is this true?

Yes, it is possible, you often face problems with computer’s motherboards during or after rainy season. This is mainly due to environmental factors such as moisture, dust, and humidity, which can affect electronic components. Let’s know about few reasons due to which rainy season can lead to computer problems.

Computer contains many sensitive parts

Humidity in the air : The humidity in the air increases significantly during the rainy season. A computer contains many sensitive parts. High humidity can create issue, especially on sensitive parts like the motherboard. Moisture can cause short circuits, corrosion of metal components, and shorten the lifespan of electronic components.

Static Discharge : High humidity can cause problems. This can affect electrical insulation properties and lead to electrostatic discharge (ESD), which can seriously damage the  motherboard or other components. This can cause permanent damage, and it makes you wonder what happened to my computer all of a sudden?

Power fluctuation : is a deadly threat for motherboard – Power surges or fluctuations are more common during the rainy season, especially if there are thunderstorms. These fluctuations can damage the power supply unit (PSU) or send harmful currents to the motherboard and other components. This results in permanent ‘shut down computer’ problem.

Regular cleaning & maintenance : Clean dust from fans, vents and motherboard regularly especially during rainy season when humidity is high.  Keep computer dust free to reduce moisture accumulation on internal parts.  Maintenance plays an important role in protecting , That’s why you need to periodically check the motherboard and other components for signs of corrosion or moisture. Fixing minor problems early can prevent more serious problems later.

Dust and Dirt : A common reason of the motherboard damage issue is conductive paths. During or after the rainy season, the accumulation of dust combined with moisture can create conductive paths on the motherboard, leading to short circuits or malfunctioning.

Computer needs to be kept in ventilated places

Ventilation is crucial for protecting , if the ventilation system is obstructed or inadequate, the combination of heat and humidity can cause internal components to overheat or experience moisture accumulation. Need to ensure good air circulation. Computer needs to be kept in ventilated places during rainy season.

Some precautions can be helpful to avoid such problems.

Use a Dehumidifier : Keep the environment around the computer dry. high humidity can lead to moisture buildup on the motherboard. A dehumidifier helps to maintain an optimal indoor humidity level (around 30-50%) to prevent moisture-related issues.

Surge Protector : Fluctuations in power supply are common during the rainy season, and if there is a thunderstorm, the chances of such fluctuations can increase. Use a high-quality surge protector or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect your computer from power spikes.

Silica Gel effectively absorbs moisture from the air during rainy season which can help prevent short circuit. Keep silica gel packets or moisture absorbents near your computer to reduce moisture around sensitive components.

Air conditioning: Keep your room air-conditioned if possible, as it helps reduce humidity.

Turn off when not in use: If there’s a threat of thunderstorms or a power outage, you’d better turn off your computer and unplug it to avoid electrical damage.

Elevate your computer: It is important to place your CPU tower and other components on a raised platform to avoid direct contact with the floor, especially if there is a risk of flooding. Avoid placing near windows or places where it may be exposed to rain or direct moisture.

Check for Leaks: Sometimes we don’t know about leaks so you should make sure that there are no leaks from windows or roofs in your work place or home that could lead water to your computer.

Use a Cover: When not in use, cover your computer with an anti-static dust or waterproof cover to protect it from moisture and dust.

Corrosion inhibitors: Use corrosion inhibitors (such as CRC or WD-40) on connectors or exposed metal parts of the motherboard to prevent rust and corrosion. Be very careful not to spray directly on sensitive components.

Data Backup: For safe side take frequent backup of important data, especially during rainy season. In the event of a hardware failure, you will have a backup copy of your information.

I hope that by taking these precautions, you can greatly minimize the risk of damage to your computer‘s motherboard and other components during rainy weather.
